THE REVAMP TRAP
A website revamp feels exciting until you're three months in, over budget, and looking at a site that's prettier but converts worse. That happens because most revamps start with design and skip the strategy underneath it.
NAVIGATION COMES FIRST
Navigation comes first. Before you choose colours, decide what journey you want a user to take. Where should they go first? What do they care about most? Design your menu for speed and clarity, make it consistent across pages, and include a search bar.
CONTENT IS THE SECOND LAYER
Content is the second layer. Users arrive with intent, to learn or to buy. Help them do whichever one they came for. Know your audience and speak their language. Keep everything current. And never convert text into images. Search engines can't read your gorgeous infographic.
UNDERSTAND YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE
Understanding your target audience is the foundation. Demographics, interests, accessibility needs, technical literacy, all shape the interface. Do the research before you open Figma.
MOBILE-FIRST IS A REQUIREMENT
Mobile-first is a requirement. Over 95% of traffic comes from mobile in many markets. Design for your users' internet speeds, not your office wifi.
DESIGN SITS ON TOP
Design choices sit on top of all four above. Once you know your navigation, content strategy, audience, and mobile requirements, the design becomes an expression of those decisions rather than an arbitrary aesthetic choice.
Strategy first. Design second. Never the other way around.
